How long does it take to tour Chichen Itza?
To tour Chichen Itza, the approximate time is 45 minutes if you only wish to see the buildings that are around the Pyramid of Kukulkan.
Areas of Chichen Itza
Chichen Itza can be divided into 2 main areas:
Main Area
- Pyramid of Kukulkan
- Temple of the Warriors
- Temple of the 1000 Columns
- Ball Game Court
Observatory Area
- Nunnery
- House of the Deer
- Red House
- House of the High Priest
Old Chichen Area
- Temple of the Five Levels
- Temple of the Moon
Touring the Main Area
The Pyramid of Kukulkan is the main building of Chichen Itza and the surrounding buildings such as the Temple of the 1000 Columns, Temple of the Warriors and the Ball Game Court, along with the secondary buildings, are toured with the guide in approximately 45 minutes, at a semi-slow pace and explaining only the most interesting facts about Chichen Itza.
This area is the most visited and is the one that most tourists know, if you come on a shared excursion this is the area you will get to know.
Observatory Area
From the main area to reach the Observatory building you have to walk approximately 10-15 minutes and the main building is the Observatory where the Mayan priests observed the sky.
This area is also covered in about 45 minutes along with the secondary buildings.
Old Chichen Area
Last year after many years Chichen Itza finally opened a new section to the public called Old Chichen, this area is a little further away and you have to walk approximately 30 minutes to reach this new section.
This part of Chichen Itza due to its distance is only for people who come on private excursions or who come to Chichen Itza on their own.
Also due to these distance restrictions only really passionate people, archaeologists or people with advanced knowledge of the Mayan civilization come here.
This area takes about 1 hour to tour.
